For My Dear, Jeanne (Who belongs to this world and what lies beyond…)
“If a picture paints a thousand words,
Then why can’t I paint you?
The words would never show
The you I’ve come to know …”
A few poignant lines from the hit ballad, “If”, a song I performed on the show so many moons ago, and to this day remains one of my all time favorites; right up there with the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
In the early years I serenaded Jeanne, my Duchess”, quite a few times, as written in the script, with that catchy little ditty; and, during rehearsals on set, setting up the camera shots I clearly recall my ‘Duchess’, interrupting my singing with that famous stage voice of hers: (loud and strident), “Would you shut the F . . . up, with that same old fricking song?!! You’re making me sick already!” . . . Her sense of humor was Infectious, to say the least.
The cast and crew erupted into uproarious laughter, the director called for a 5 minute break; I couldn’t stop. Jeannie brought me to tears as I buckled over in hysterics. (So you see, Jeanne‘s genius was to help me humanize Brock Reynolds, a great character who could easily slip into a “Holier-than-thou” kind of guy- a huge mistake)
Thank you, Jeanne, for all your generosity and kindness – on and off the set.
Jeanne, single handedly cleared any and all tension or anxiousness on stage 43; We became a family, a beautiful unit, creating beautiful scenes which soon became thousands of shows – The Young And The Reckless – brilliantly defying all the rules and regulations of daytime television.
And my “Duchess” was at the helm of the ship, indefatigably cheering everyone on, “Yes, you can do it! Everything is possible!”
In short, Jeanne inspired me to become an accomplished actor, a true professional, a known entity in a brutal business. A true STAR, in my opinion, has the unique and God-given gift to bring out the best in others. Never looking for accolades, praise or adoration. It simply comes naturally.
And, that’s what my Jeanne was, is, and will always be: A NATURAL, God Bless her.
